My favourite book in the whole world is Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. It’s a great story about being poor in both senses and judged by the world. The main character, Valjean, is an old man who’s spent most of his life as a prisoner for stealing some bread once. I’ve only read the book in swedish and would love to someday be able to read the original script in french, however the language in it is plain beautiful. It’s simple and describing at the same time. Reading it is almost like watching a movie, you get wonderful pictures in your head, and much before you know it, you’re on the last page. Wishing you were on the first one still. I always thought that if Hollywood decided to make a film out of the script, it would have amazing potential to become something beautiful.
I happened to see a picture of Liam Neeson today while reading some about Natasha Richardson (may she rest in peace), and it just crossed my mind that he should be the perfect Valjean, would there ever be a Hollywood movie based on Les Misérables. I had no idea about this movie until now, but then I looked at his filmography, and sure enough he has already done the role! Am I a psychic or what?
What is weird is that I have seen him in several movies, but never thought of this idea before. It all just became so clear today.
I guess it has to be a great movie, seeing as the book is absolutely flawless. And the cast seems great, not only Liam, but Claire Danes as the beautiful Cosette and Geoffery Rush as the police officer Javert. AND it’s directed by Bille August! Sounds perfect to me. I can’t understand for the life of me why I haven’t heard about this adaption before. But I’m going to download it right away, and hopefully it’ll become one of my favourites!
Though high expectations aren’t usually good to have, I have a great feeling about this film. Wish me luck.
Xoxo
